Police captured 26 foreigners, including 13 children, as they attempted to cross into Syria illegally. Turkish media reported that the foreigners were looking to join the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).
The governorate of Gaziantep, a province on the border with Syria where the suspects were captured, said the group was detained over the weekend in an undisclosed location and would be deported to their country of origin. The statement did not mention their nationalities.
Turkey has deported more than 1,300 foreigners seeking to join ISIS over the past year.
In another development, the Turkish army announced that 11 Syrian nationals attempting to illegally cross into Turkey were captured on the border in Hatay province early yesterday. Suspects were armed with Kalashnikov rifles and pistols, army officials said.
