200-year-old mansion goes under restoration
Built by Süleymaniye scholar Abdullah Şerif Ağa in 1825 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, the Demirciler Mansion in Kocaeli province's Dilovası is being restored by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality.According to a municipality statement, the mansion exemplifies important civil architecture of the era in which it was built. Before the restoration began, the mansion was expropriated and the reconstruction project was approved by the Committee of Cultural Property Protection in Kocaeli. The calligraphy on the mansion, which was painted by the chief painter of the Ottoman court, describes a part from the Quran's Surah Ali 'Imran. Both the ceilings and the floors of the mansion are made of wood. There is a mihrab (a niche that represents the direction for prayer) that is believed to be decorated with a painting, presumably an imaginary Istanbul view, on the southwest wall of the mansion, in addition to a cupboard whose doors are ornamented with drawings.
