Study: Probiotics in yogurt relieve hay fever

Probiotics, the good bacteria in yogurt, relieves hay fever, according to researchers at Vanderbilt University. Based on 23 studies involving almost 2,000 people, the analysis showed yogurt can ease symptoms like sneezing and itchy eyes. Researchers say yogurt also has clinical benefits for patients with eczema and irritable bowel syndrome, as it improves their quality of life.

Probiotics equalize the balance of bacteria in the intestines and may influence the activity of T-cells, a type of white blood cell involved in the immune system.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, develops when excess mucus is generated by the upper respiratory system. It may be caused by inhaling airborne particles such as pollen. Hay fever symptoms include sleeping disorder, runny nose, cough, sore throat, itching, nose stiffness, fatigue, concentration loss, watery eyes and loss of smell and taste. Certain studies suggest hay fever may trigger social and psychological problems and decrease the quality of life. The analysis was published in Allergy & Rhinology. Not long ago, researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands said probiotics in yogurt may help beat depression.
