Cities are a place for employment, entertainment and more. So it is only natural that some grow much faster. Here are some of the fastest-growing cities around the world.
New Delhi, India
India’s capital doubled its populace in the last two decades from around 15 million making it to 30 million in 2020.
Shanghai, China
China’s sprawling city of Shanghai made a similar jump from about 14 million to 27 million within 20 years.
Dhaka, Bangladesh
In terms of rate of growth, Dhaka surpasses even New Delhi by more than doubling its population of 10 million to 21 million.
Kinshasa, DR Congo
The capital and largest city of the country boasts over 14 million people, more than doubling its number compared to 6.1 million in 2000.
Cairo, Egypt
Egypt follows the trend of capital cities being the most crowded with 13 million in 2000, jumping to just under 21 million in 2020.
Luanda, Angola
The capital and largest city of the south African country Angola, almost tripled its population from 2.8 to 8.3 million by 2020.
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Not making the biggest jump in numbers but the numbers are still impressive: From 17 million in 2000 to 22 million in 2020.
Bogota, Colombia
Colombia’s capital made an impressive jump in numbers in the last few decades from 6.3 million to almost 11 by 2020.
Istanbul, Turkey
Often mistaken as Turkey’s capital, Istanbul is the biggest city of the country and used to have 5.5 million in 2000 and jumped to 15.1 million in 2020.
Lagos, Nigeria
Africa’s second-largest city after Kinshasa, Lagos boasted 7.2 million and made a jump to 14.3 million people by 2020.
Lahore, Pakistan
More than doubling in number, Lahore used to have 5.5 million people but has now grown to 12.6 million.
