Sena Alkan / Ankara Turkey does not always experience harsh weather conditions during the winter, and it is indeed very rare for the western provinces to see much snow compared to the eastern cities. Many tourists think that Turkey is only suitable for summer holidays, with its blue waters and hot-sunny days. However, there are many reasons why you should consider visiting Turkey in the winter.
Considering Turkey is mostly popular for its summer holiday destinations, winter tourism in Turkey is comparably cheaper than other seasons. Low prices often fool many tourists into thinking Turkey is not an interesting place to visit during this season, however, there are many benefits to visiting during less crowded times. Abant Yedigöller (the Seven Lakes), in the northern province of Bolu, is one of the most renowned places to visit year-round. However, in the winter months its dazzling landscape offers a pristine-picturesque view that many local and foreign tourists visit simply to experience.
Skiing is the first thing that travelers expect from a winter trip and Sarıkamış, in the eastern Kars province, is a perfect destination for you. Renowned for its crystal-snow covered slopes, Sarıkamış is a popular skiing destination surrounded by majestic yellow pine forests, which are not only beautiful, but also help protect skiers from the elements.
Uludağ, located in the northwestern province of Bursa, is the first destination that springs to mind for winter travel in Turkey. Uludağ is the oldest winter holiday destination in the country and still tops the list to this day with its vast number of facilities and high quality resorts.
As a year-round destination, located in the southern province of Antalya, Alanya is worth a visit in the winter. In December and January, two of the coldest months of the year in Turkey, the daily temperature is 10-15 degrees Celsius. However, since the sun is shining throughout the day, it is rarely uncomfortably cold.
