Excellent guards as well, the Karabaş orthe Anatolian shepherd dog has been guarding flocks of sheep from wolves, bears, lions, tigers, leopards, jackals, and even cheetahs for the last 6,000 years.
They have very thick hair on their neck to protect their throat, but are a naturally thin with a large rib cage and small stomach. They look heavier than they actually are, due to their luscious thick coat.
The Kars Köpeği or the Kars Turkish Shepherd, a strong, brave and devoted dog of mountainous and lowland areas in north-east Turkey, is unfortunately very nervous, cautious and even unfriendly towards strangers.
With a tendency to bond with one person only, the Kars dog can be found in an array of colours from black, reddish brown, grey, mixtures of black and brown, white, piebald, to white with grey patches.
