As Turkey went into a weekend lockdown, the strays on its streets were not forgotten. Animal rights activists and a newly established police unit took turns feeding the country’s smaller residents.

Apart from members of security forces who manage the curfew, which ended Monday morning, and the few with permission to go out, everyone was at home, giving animals the opportunity to occupy spaces usually packed with crowds.

Most of the animals spent the two days freely roaming the streets, sleeping on sidewalks where they would otherwise be disturbed by human commotion.
