Fenerbahçe's best transfer so far is not a player

After missing out on a Super League title over the last three years, Fenerbahçe chairman Aziz Yıldırım has finally understood that he has to change his policies and let the coach of the team decide the strategies. Yıldırım is known for his involvement in the football team's strategic and tactical processes, and many coaches have walked away from the club after a spell of poor results, citing interference from the chairman. Now, as a sign that he has understood his mistake, Yıldırım appointed one of his archrivals to the club, the team's former coach, Aykut Kocaman, after claiming that Kocaman would never return to the club for as long as was chairman. Now, it is obvious that a healthy environment in a football club is a must for success, and as the chairman of the club Yıldırım seems to have started to do the right thing.

First of all, none of the coaches that were appointed between Kocaman's departure and return, namely Ersun Yanal, Vitor Pereira and Dick Advocaat, were given more than a year at the club. Obviously a coach cannot put his plan in place immediately after being appointed, and the pressure of immediate success makes thing harder. But still, Yıldırım did not give a second chance to any of these coaches, and the only coach who has stayed for more than one year at the club before them was Aykut Kocaman.

The reason why Yıldırım is so impatient about his policies is that he also feels the same pressure as his coaches, but the difference is that he is the reason for his own pressure. Rather than building long-term plans and rejuvenating Fenerbahçe with a long-term coach, he always opts for short-term success and the result is a very unstable Fenerbahçe. Added to that, Yıldırım is not a person you can easily quarrel with, his gigantic ego and unquestioned rule over Fenerbahçe has created a terrifying atmosphere at the club, which is very harmful for progress. Even if you achieve the success Yıldırım wants, if you do not behave as he wants to you can be sacked, as happened to Ersun Yanal in 2014 when he was sacked days after he won the Super League championship.

Now, the importance of Kocaman's return to the club is that it says a lot about Yıldırım, without Yıldırım speaking. This move shows that Yıldırım has understood that he was the main reason for his team's poor performance in recent years, and he has now appointed one of his main critics as the coach of the team. Given Kocaman would never return to the same circumstances he left in 2013, it was Yıldırım who left the conditions he created at that time. This is not just a relief for the coach, who understands that he will work in more reliable conditions, but also the whole club will work in a more progressive atmosphere. Thus, regardless of the all transfers Fenerbahçe has made so far, truly this one was the most crucial. Neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi can reach their potential without a healthy, progressive club environment, and if Yıldırım can be patient enough to get results with his new attitude, Fenerbahçe's return could be phenomenal.
