Nicknamed the 'Turkish Messi,' 18-year-old Emre Mor received the plaudits for his first performance in the friendly match between Turkey and Montenegro that resulted in a 1-0 win for Turkey
Turkey introduced a new star to world football yesterday in their 1-0 win over Montenegro. Just 18, Emre Mor is being compared to Lionel Messi. Previously dubbed the "Danish Messi" until a change of national allegiance, it would be appropriate to call the prodigiously talented Emre Mor a "Turkish delight" after surprisingly being included in Turkey's 31-man provisional Euro 2016 squad.
Born to Turkish parents in the Danish city of Bronshoj, Mor represented Denmark in the U-17, 18 and 19 levels before disappointing Danish fans by switching his loyalty to the Turkish Football Federation and the FC Nordsjælland winger was called up in March by the Turkish U-21 side for his only cap against the Slovakia U-21 team in a 2017 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualification match. Much has already been spoken about him in the influential European media regarding Mor's raw talent and with scouts from Manchester City, Ajax Amsterdam, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund keeping tabs on the player's growth in the competitive surroundings of the Danish Superliga, his call-up to the senior national team squad would have increased his demand a notch higher.
He showed his skills in the friendly match between Turkey and Montenegro on Sunday night. Turkey beat Montenegro 1-0 in a friendly part of final preparations for the 2016 UEFA European Championship due to start in France on June 10. Arda Turan assisted Mehmet Topal in the 95th minute, giving the win to Turkey.
Turkish manager Fatih Terim made a total of six substitutions in a generally carefully played match in the new Antalya Stadium, in the Mediterranean Turkish coastal city of the same name. Terim fielded Emre Mor in the second half and praised the young footballer after his impressive showing. In his first match with the senior team, Mor impressed the fans and received an ovation from the Antalya faithful. He helped the team both defensively and in attack with his fast and effective football. Terim said, "I took a big risk with Emre Mor. But now I'm happy both for me and him. I called him up to the national team because he is not an ordinary player, he is an extraordinary player. He is still very young. I will continue to call up such talented young players."
"We did not play really well tonight, I have to admit that. But the important thing is that we were patient, and we won in the end," Turkey's veteran playmaker Arda Turan said.
In another friendly match played on May 22, Turkey were beaten 2-1 by England away.
In six days time, on June 5, Turkey will face Slovenia away in the last friendly ahead of EURO 2016. Turkey will be in Group D of EURO 2016 together with Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. Turkey is due to face Croatia on June 12, Spain on June 17, and the Czech Republic on June 21 in the EURO 2016 group stage.
Elsewhere, holders Spain warmed up for Euro 2016 with a 3-1 defeat Sunday of Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Italy edged Scotland 1-0, Portugal trounced Norway 3-0 - and Germany suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat against lively Slovakia.
These were the last matches for Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany before the final Euro squad lists are submitted to UEFA by midnight today.
Veteran Beşiktaş striker Mario Gomez gave Germany an early lead from a penalty, before Slovakia stunned the hosts with goals from Marek Hamsik, Michal Duris and Juraj Kucka. It was a promising display from a team that has qualified for the Euro finals for the first time.
Later on a busy night, Romania crashed 4-3 at home to impressive Ukraine in an action-packed game. Later Sunday, Portugal caned Norway 3-0, despite being without Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ricardo Quaresma, Raphael Guerreiro and Eder all scored for Portugal, who could have won by a bigger margin over mediocre Norway.
