The story of the champions

Beşiktaş finally won the league. This weekend, after seven years of pain and agony, the Eagles finally won. It happened more easily than expected, given Beşiktaş are notorious for their mental breakdowns in the final games and moments. Nevertheless, the team without a home for most of the season, who lost their center backs midway through the season and whose goalkeeper almost left the club beat the fancy Fenerbahçe who had Luis Nani, Robin Van Persie and Diego Ribas in their squad. It was truly a coaching success and Beşiktaş coach Şenol Güneş deserves all the credit.

First of all, what made Beşiktaş different from all other Super League clubs was that, except the final games of the season, they always tried to play their own game and created at least some reproducible results. Unlike other teams, who played a completely different style in every other match, Beşiktaş's game had consistency, which made the players confident allowing them to be intelligent about the game they were playing. Given the only way to boost creativity is boosting confidence, the Beşiktaş players were more productive compared to their rivals who had to play in a chaotic atmosphere.

Secondly, what is equally as important as having a consistent strategy, is having an efficient strategy. Especially in the first half of the season, coach Şenol Güneş opted for dominant and offensive tactics, which was not popular amongst Turkish teams. Nonetheless, given Beşiktaş had the ball, the space and the time against most of their counter-attacking opponents, they had everything they needed to create opportunities. Their opponents could not understand how this formula could be lethal when combined with Beşiktaş's individual talents. Thus, in most of the games this season, all Beşiktaş had to do was push the opponent from the wings and try again and again until the team scored.

Of course, there were some individual talents who shone more than their teammates and even more than the team's strategies sometimes. Atiba Hutchinson, Beşiktaş's main defensive midfielder who played in almost every game this season, was the key man in Beşiktaş's championship win. His energy and discipline always compensated for Beşiktaş's deficiencies in defense and assured Beşiktaş fans that the opponent would need to pass Atiba first to reach their penalty box. Furthermore, his basic and humble game, which is simply passing the ball to the most suitable teammate, sometimes was the only factor that made Beşiktaş's game fluid. When he had the ball, you knew Beşiktaş would pass the midfield with at least four men, given Atiba would make them pass with each other and would not let them dribble the ball selfishly. On the other hand, Oğuzhan Özyakup, Beşiktaş's 24-year-old playmaker, organized Beşiktaş's attacks with Jose Sosa throughout the season. While, Özyakup prepared the opportunities in midfield, Sosa made crucial assists around the penalty box. Added to that, striker Mario Gomez had a terrific season. He was the one who made sure that if his teammates can bring the ball up to the opponent's penalty box, he would take care of the rest. Also wingmen, Kerim Frei, Ricardo Quaresma, Gökhan Töre and Olcay Şahan contributed a lot in this season. Although Quaresma and Töre were more harmful than helpful sometimes with their chaotic style.

Finally, I congratulate coach Şenol Güneş and Beşiktaş, they were the best team all season and they fully deserved this trophy. However, I wish Güneş had not sacrificed his initial tactics at the end of the season and turned to a more traditional style with defensive worries. Maybe it would have been a riskier road, but the prize and the message would be much richer and louder. Nevertheless, more will definitely come from this team and Şenol Güneş, Turkish football should be thankful to them.
