Galatasaray's jaw-dropping spending spree

The Lions, who are at a risk of being banned from UEFA competitions after failing to meet financial fair play terms, revealed that they spent 150 million euros on transfers over the last six years

Turkey's most successful team, Galatasaray are in difficult times after they failed to meet the terms of the agreements put forward in a deal reached with European football's top body to meet its financial fair play criteria last year. With a decision due in February, Galatasaray may be banned from UEFA competition for two years. If they are banned, it will likely be with good reason as Galatasaray's spending spree over the last six years has been jaw-dropping. Galatasaray have spent 150 million euros on transfer fees in that time. They also signed contracts worth 380 million euros with their players. The biggest spending was done during the era of former president Ünal Aysal and former coach Fatih Terim. As a publicly traded company Galatasaray share the costs of the transfers with the public. They have to announce the costs of transfers in the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). According to the official data compiled by Anatolian Agency, Galatasaray made 67 transfers in the last six seasons. In that era they entered into a series of financial obligations in order to pay the contracts they made with their players. During this era, Adnan Polat, Ünal Aysal, Duygun Yarsuvat and Dursun Özbek took office respectively. In Ünal Aysal's three-and-a-half-year term, Galatasaray bought 42 footballers spending 110 million euros. The only president who did not transfer any footballers was Duygun Yarsuvat. Under Fatih Terim's management, Galatasaray transferred 25 footballers. Terim was assigned coach in Ünal Aysal's term in 2011. In 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 the club won the league. But it cost 78 million euros as a result of the 25 transfers. Roberto Mancini, who was appointed coach after Terim, increased the financial burden even more. Mancini wanted nine footballers to be transferred and had the club spend 19 million euros on transfers. Of the nine players who were transferred in the Mancini era, only Koray Günter is in the squad now. According to data from the Money League market research firm at Deloitte, Galatasaray generated 570 million euros over the last four seasons. Despite this high-level income, the club have been taking losses of 164 million euros over the last three seasons. Galatasaray are expected to lose 30 million euros at the end of this season. The Lions barely earned 40 million euros after they sold six footballers over the last six seasons. Meanwhile, Galatasaray's current president Dursun Özbek made a serious accusation to his predecessor Ünal Aysal. Özbek alleged that Aysal took a bank loan saying he would build a hotel for Galatasaray. According to Özbek, Aysal used this loan to sign Brazilian player Carlos Telles. The club paid more than 6 million euros for the player. Galatasaray have been negotiating to sell their striker Burak Yılmaz in order to get out of their financial crisis. West Ham United are involved in a race with four other Premier League clubs for Yılmaz. SkySports has confirmed that the Hammers are after the 30-year-old and that they are not the only English club interested in his services. Last week West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan confirmed to Sky Sports that the club were hoping to sign a new forward during the transfer window. The Hammers have made a 7 million euro bid for the Galatasaray striker. The report claims that the Hammers have made a bid that will see the east London-based side pay 6 million euros upfront and a further 1 million euros in instalments if the club ensures Europa League football. Yılmaz has been one of the most prolific strikers in the league over recent years and has scored 81 times in 140 games for the Lions. Stoke City are the latest Premier League club to have joined the race for Yılmaz according to the Mirror. The same report also claims that Tottenham are also set to make a bid for the prolific striker. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino plans to strengthen his forward line and provide support for Harry Kane upfront.Stoke and Spurs are being rivalled by West Ham who are currently the only club out of the three reported to have actually made a bid.According to reports in the Turkish media, Galatasaray may sell their Dutch star Wesley Sneijder for a reasonable fee.
