Gündoğan extends Borussia Dortmund contract by one year

Germany midfielder İlkay Gündoğan has extended his contract at Borussia Dortmund, ending speculation he will leave the club this summer. With his contract due to expire in 2016, Gündoğan was expected to move on for a transfer fee before the season begins. Dortmund says now, however, that the 24-year-old extended his stay by another year through June 2017. Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says, "I'm convinced that he will play a big role in BVB achieving its goals on the pitch." Gündoğan scored nine goals and set up 10 more in 80 Bundesliga games since joining from Nuremberg in 2011. He missed much of the 2013/14 season with back problems. He had been linked with Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
