Galatasaray increase their run of games without defeat to 10 matches
After Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş's victories this weekend, all eyes were on the other favorite, Galatasaray. The Yellow-Reds won against Balıkesirspor 3-1 in the Spor Toto Super League on Monday night. It was the last game of matchday 20 in Turkey's top football division. With this win, Galatasaray increased their run of games without defeat to 10 matches. The last game they lost was against Trabzonspor in the 10th week. Since then, life has been sweet for Galatasaray under new coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu. They have won eight matches and drawn twice in the last 10 weeks. Galatasaray finished the job early at their home ground Türk Telekom Arena as their Cameroonian center-back Aurelien Chedjou, Dutch attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder and Turkish striker Burak Yılmaz made the score 3-0 in the first half. Balıkesirspor midfielder Aykut Çeviker was sent off in the 61st minute after fouling Portuguese wonderkid, Bruma. Visitors Balıkesirspor narrowed the gap to two near the end of the game when Bosnian winger Ermin Zec found the net for his team to make the score 3-1. Galatasaray's Brazilian defensive midfielder, Felipe Melo, sustained an injury and was subbed-out in the second half of the match. Winning against their underdog opponents 3-1 in Istanbul, Galatasaray stay in third place in the league table and raised their points tally to 45. Despite the comfortable scoreline, Galatasaray coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu criticized his players after the game, claiming that their lax defending overshadowed the win. He said, "We won but the fact that we gave too many goal opportunities our rivals shadowed our success. I'm discontent with the performance of my squad. We did a good job till we made the score 3-1. But since my footballers relaxed after the goal difference, they stopped playing collective football." Meanwhile the former chairman of Galatasaray Ünal Aysal said that he would not become a candidate for the club presidency in the general assembly that will be organized in May.
