New age Turkish waffle outpaces Belgian-original

Organized by the International Taste & Quality Institute (iTQi) in Brussels, Belgium, where the famous waffle originated, the 13th Waffle Competition was held with the participation of 2,000 different waffle makers from 120 countries whose products were tasted by 135 chefs with Michelin stars.

Among the contestants, İzmir-based Akın Waffle was crowned as the best waffle maker. A waffle is a dish made from leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. There are many variations based on the type of waffle iron and recipe used.

Waffles are eaten throughout the world, particularly in Belgium, which has over a dozen regional varieties. Belgian waffles were originally leavened with yeast, but baking powder is now often used.

The Turkish waffle, on the other hand, is fresh and made-to-order with your choice of sweet sauces, fruit toppings, chocolate, nuts and/or pistachio. The sauce choices are usually Nutella, strawberry, banana, vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, et cetera. You can choose fresh fruits like bananas, strawberries, apples or kiwi for the next layer. On top, you can add chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles, candied and/or dried fruit.
