Goethe Institute to screen 'My German Friend'


The Goethe-Institut in Istanbul is presenting the finest examples of German cinema as part of the "Wednesday Films" series. Tomorrow, the institute will screen Jeanine Meerapfel's "Der deutsche Freund" (My German Friend). The film follows a young Jewish woman named Sulamit who lives with her family in Buenos Aires. Her family settled down in Argentina after running away from Nazi Germany and the district they are residing is also occupied by other Jews who ran away from the Nazis.One day, Sulamit meets a young German man named Friedrich who is also living with his family down the street. The young couple first becomes friends and then lovers. However, Friedrich learns that his father is a high ranking Nazi and breaks all relations with his family. He sets off to Germany to discover more about his father. In Germany, he first joins the German student movement and then the guerrillas in Argentina. Sulamit follows Friedrich to Germany, but she finally gives up and tries to move on. However, it is not easy for Sulamit to forget Friedrich.When: TomorrowWhere: Goethe-Institut, Istanbul
