At least 10 hikers were reportedly swept away Sunday by an avalanche in the Swiss canton of Valais, near the Italian and French borders, a police spokesperson said.

A rescue operation is underway on the Col de Fenestral, at 2,500 meters, where the avalanche occurred.

No additional details were immediately available, the police spokesperson added.
