No progress to resolve the conflict

A new meeting of the Contact Group, including Ukrainian and Russian officials and pro-Russian separatists, to settle the months-long conflict in eastern Ukraine, was held in Minsk, Belarus on Wednesday. However, no progress was made during the peace talks. As the talks have been continuing online via Skype, the trilateral group reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners. "The Minsk talks continue, but it is still early to talk about any agreements. The only thing I can say is that we succeeded in reaching an agreement on the exchange of prisoners on the 'all for all' basis – 150 for 225," the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Alexander Zakharchenko, said on Thursday, as reported by the Russian state-run news agency Itar-Tass. The Moscow-influenced separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine has not been settled despite attempts to put an end to violent clashes. However, no peaceful and permanent resolution has been agreed upon so far. Truce talks could not produce a breakthrough over issues relating to the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. The cease-fire that was agreed upon in the Sept. 5 Minsk Protocol and the Sept. 9 Minsk Memorandum have been reportedly violated many times.
