Dutch angry at gov't for double standards on Turkey

by Mehmet Solmaz - Alper Gel

Following the brutal crackdown on a peaceful crowd composed of the Turkish-Dutch community and the forced deportation of a Turkish minister, many Dutch social media users - including prominent figures - have expressed their frustration at their government. Some of them say the Netherlands should be held accountable for violations of international law, while some others question the country's friendly ties with those supporting terror groups like the PKK. Here are some of the comments made after the government aggression in Rotterdam.

Anna Log: I am ashamed of the Dutch government. I distanced myself from their policies years ago. I am really shocked. I am really sad and disappointed. The Netherlands should never refuse a minister from a friendly or an ally country. Shameful low point.

Peter R. de Vries: On Dec. 3, 2013 former minister Timmermans was demonstrating in Kiev against the government. Double standards? #TurkishDispute Hypocrite.

Brian Spoorendonk: I have to say that I don't get why Turkish ministers cannot carry out campaigns here. That's freedom of speech and democracy in my view. Why do we need to act so difficult?

Demy Steffens: PKK terrorists are welcomed [in the Netherlands] and just a lady, who only wants to talk, is not allowed to come. The Netherlands is a police state with coward dogs. Argh, puke on my own land! [Prime Minister] Mark Rutte is from Hitler family.

Mariska Stout: Scandalous. The Netherlands gives freedom and space to all terrorist groups for them to protest freely in Netherlands, even ISIS [Daesh]. But you refuse a Turkish minister? Where is this going? I am also glad that former minister Ben Bot thinks like us.

Hidde Bouwmeester: I would like to stick to the facts, the freedom to demonstrate and assembly from Turkish "Yes" camp is denied. This is a really stupid move from Rutte. Me a as Dutchman, I would like to distance myself from the violations of international law that was violated by the Netherlands and Rutte. I hope [politician Geert] Wilders doesn't take advantage of this. Although, I am also not happy with the prime minister. I hope many Dutch-Turkish citizens understand that many Dutchmen don't support such an act. I want respect and mutual acceptation with each other.
