Africa's first solar-powered airport was unveiled Friday afternoon by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) in the city of George, South Africa.
Celebrating the success at the launch, Transport Minister Ms Dipou Peters said: "This is a moment in history that will shape green initiatives on the continent."
Solar radiation collected from 200 square meters of photo-voltaic panels will generate 750kw of clean renewable energy for the airport once it has reached its final phase.
The energy producing capacity is expected to increase over time with excess energy being sold to national energy provider Eskom.
"The government is well on track in transitioning South Africa to a low-carbon, inclusive, resource efficient and climate-resilient economy and society," Peters said to media at the ceremony.
Finishing two months ahead of schedule, state-owned ACSA began the R16 million rand ($1 million) solar power upgrade last year in March.
The new airport is part of the 2025-2030 long term vision to convert all nine ACSA nationally owned airports to use clean renewable energy
