Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is expected to restructure the ministries involved with the economy after the June 7 general elections. The restructuring will be part of major economic reforms attempting to increase coordination and efficiency between ministries and to reduce bureaucracy sources from the AK Party headquarters in Ankara reported.
Accordingly, the Science, Industry and Technology Ministry will be combined with the Development Ministry for enhanced industry and development coordination. An Industry and Development Ministry will be established to create and strengthen the backbone of Turkey's economy. The areas of science and technology will be included in other ministries and a ministry responsible for research and development will be established.
In addition, the Customs and Trade Ministry is also expected to be merged with the Economy Ministry. As domestic and foreign trade will be assessed as a whole under the new model, there will no longer be separate ministries for domestic and foreign trade. Customs will become a strong support unit within the new ministry. The new support unit will be coordinated intensely with both economic institutions and security units.
The Economic Social Council's structure will also be reformed into a strong structure that will control the pulse of the economy while arranging legal actions. In regard to restructuring the council, Development Minister Cevdet Yılmaz said that the work required to reform the council into a structure that is prominent in the areas of the economy and society has begun. Underlining the importance of the council gaining operability, Yılmaz said: "The purpose of this structure is to provide significant arrangements in not only working life, but also in economic and social life as well as to establish discussion and a setting for documents and resolutions. It will have an important function in this regard, and through the draft, which is being prepared, the structure will have an increased function."
