Elena Peshkova, wife of Oleg Peshkova, the pilot of the Su-24 that was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet in November 2015, said on Thursday she is ready to come together with Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Moscow. "Regardless of how much pain is felt by our family, we will go to this meeting," she said in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV.
Çavuşoğlu gave an interview to the same TV channel on Wednesday, where he said, "I am ready to offer my condolences to the wife of the deceased Russian pilot."
The relations between the two countries hit a low in November 2015 after Turkish jets downed a Russian Su-24 bomber near the Syrian border for violating Turkish airspace. Turkey provided radar data proving that the Russian planes breached the border while Moscow insisted that the warplane had not crossed it. Initially, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin exchanged harsh criticisms and ultimatums. The Kremlin directed accusations at Ankara and imposed sanctions on various Turkish industries. The relationship entered a positive new phase following the Aug. 9 meeting between Erdoğan and Putin in St. Petersburg.
