German FM Steinmeier visits Turkey, discusses refugee crisis with FM Sinirlioğlu

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Ankara on Friday and met with interim Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu to discuss bilateral relations and the rapidly increasing refugee crisis. Following the meeting between the two ministers a joint press conference was held and Steinmeier praised Turkey's ongoing efforts to aid Syrian refugees. He said Turkey has a constructive power in the region. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently announced that the country is preparing to receive by far the largest number of immigrants, an estimated 800,000 by the end of the year, Sinirlioğlu said Germany's stance must set an example for all other European Union countries. The two ministers also discussed Turkey's fight against terrorism and Sinirlioğlu said that combating terror also tops the agenda of Turkish-German relations. In this regard, he said that as he explained Turkey's actions and its combat against the PKK and the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) he urged Germany for further cooperation on the issue.Indicating the significance of the increasing refugee crisis, Steinmeier said offers to help should not be left hanging merely as an offer and the international community must realize that there is currently a huge influx of refugees. In regard to providing financial aid to Turkey, Steinmeier added that there are two topics that the EU needs to decide on – providing financial support to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and providing financial aid to Syria's neighboring countries."First of all, Turkey neighbors a very dangerous country, Syria, so there is a severe conflict resulting due to this danger. Secondly, Turkey has undertaken a serious role and accepted refugees coming from Syria. Thirdly, Turkey is a constructive power in the region and due to that it has the right to have a say regarding Syria," Steinmeier said.In response to a question on Turkey's current diplomatic efforts to deal with Syria's Bashar Assad, Sinirlioğlu said Assad has already placed himself in the dark pages of history by declaring war on his own people. He said as long as Assad stays the chaos and conflicts will remain.
