After the U.S., France and U.K.'s decision to close their embassies in Yemen amid political deadlock and heightened security conditions, Ankara is also considering closing its embassy there, but no decisions have been made yet.
"Ankara is evaluating the issue of closing its embassy in Sanaa, however there is no decision yet in that regard," a diplomatic source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Yemen has been in crisis for months, with Houthi fighters besieging the capital and then taking control. On February 7, Yemen's Houthi rebels announced that they dissolved the country's parliament and announced the establishing of an interim government for a period of two years.
Diplomatic sources said that Turkey is in the decision phase regarding its embassy in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. The U.S., U.K. and France decided to suspend their embassies' operations based on political turmoil. U.S. diplomats will be evacuated from the country on Wednesday, according to the U.S. State Department.
Regarding claims that the U.S. will ask Turkey to look after its interests in Yemen, diplomatic sources pointed out that the U.S. has not yet contacted Turkish officials about the issue.
"U.S. officials have not yet contacted Turkish officials, however the U.S. might be waiting for Ankara's decision about the closure of its embassy," diplomatic sources said.
It has been claimed that the U.S. will ask either Turkey or Algeria to look after its interests in Yemen while the embassy is closed. British citizens can request consular assistance at any European Union member state embassy.
