New system of Turkey's Aselsan hunts illegal unmanned aerial vehicles

Aselsan developed the Air Defense System Preventing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to make it possible to protect public areas and commercial zones against the illegal activities of mini and micro UAVs

Turkey's leading defense electronic systems producer, Aselsan, has developed a new air defense system to protect public and commercial areas against mini and micro unmanned aerial vehicles' (UAV) illegal activities. As the use of the UAVs, which can be bought from electronic appliance stores and on the internet, makes daily life easier, they come with a new security problem for settlement areas. The UAV's activities, such as flying near the flight paths of aircraft taking off or landing and unauthorized image and sound recording in public and commercial areas, create important security problems. Also, these vehicles can be directly used for terrorist purposes. When used for malicious purposes, mini-UAVs create a threat against airspace for strategic civil and military facilities and regions, pushing such facilities to be protected from the UAV danger.Based on this need for protection, Aselsan developed the Air Defense System Preventing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (İHTAR). İHTAR makes it possible to protect public areas and commercial zones against the illegal activities of mini and micro UAVs. Designed to safely operate in challenging conditions, the system has been put at the disposal of security forces and other elements to ensure security in public and commercial areas. It is expected to find a broad range of application, from the security of detached buildings to airports. The basic functions of the İHTAR system are the identification of the UAVs, automatic follow-up of the UAVs and labeling them as threats and preventing their illegal activities through the most appropriate countermeasures. The system commands and controls radar, cameras and preventive measures in an integrated and coordinated way, while using the most appropriate and efficient security measures.İHTAR consists of command and control systems that include electronic jamming and deception systems to identify and follow threats and prevent them via radar and cameras. It is available for fixed or mobile use to protect power plants, airports, civil facilities, border posts and military headquarters.Radar and cameras in the system, which can be used in all weather conditions, can simultaneously identify and follow more than one threat. The jamming system enables remotely commanding GPS-controlled the UAVs as well as jamming and blunting GPS channels. So, the UAVs lose control. The deception system can be used to control remote controlled and GPS-controlled mini UAVs.The İHTAR system is managed by a central command. It has an ability to jam 360 degrees, while protecting individual targets against mass attacks. It integrates multiple and various radar and preventive systems with its modular form.
