Coup d'état or democracy?
Since July 15, Western media and European politicians have been giving mixed signals. Instead of condemning the coup attempt and providing a loud and clear message in support of democracy, priority has been given to the stories concerning the state of emergency and the terrorism of certain circles in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has been ignored. After the call made by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkish people took to the streets on the night of July 15 to prevent the military coup that aimed to destroy a whole nation and state mechanism. In Austria, a demonstration held by Turkish citizens against the coup "disturbed" the authorities and an official reaction was made by diplomatic means. Another demonstration organized in Cologne by Turks to protest the coup was met with a clear barrier by the German judicial authorities and President Erdoğan's live speech was banned. The Western world has chosen to largely ignore the attack made against the Turkish people, where the Turkish Parliament was bombed, an assassination against the president was attempted and there was mass killings of civilians in the streets.Yet, the Western world has never seen such resistance by the public against an attempted coup, stopping tanks and armored vehicles. An old woman intervened to persuade a young soldier to surrender, a young man twice lay in front of a tank to halt it in its tracks and people prevented tanks by blocking roads with whatever they could find. Young people resisted soldiers firing at them on the Bosporus Bridge while the Special Forces Headquarters was bombed by TSK aircraft and hundreds of people were killed during the successful struggle against the coup.Currently, the biggest threat against the Turkish nation is seen in the covert support from some circles in the Western world. The statement of the putschists announced on the night of July 15 made reference to the "amelioration of international relations," in a clear signal to the international actors. For the time being, we do not know whether the message-receivers in Western capitals were on duty before 9:00 p.m. on the night of the coup attempt or not.At that point, for anyone following the developments in Turkey without any specific calculation, the word "empathy" should be the motto. History will not forget the positions of champions of democracy in such crucial momentsNational Unity against the coupAfter the coup was prevented by the Turkish people, a form of nationwide unity has emerged. The leaders of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the head of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahçeli and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım convened at the Presidential Office upon invitation by President Erdoğan.Turkish business associations, Turkish media and the majority of the Turkish army showed their reaction against the coup. Before arguing that Turkey would become Syria, our Western friends should take into account that the Turkish nation has different moral codes than any other nation with its profoundly brave people. We are not a pawn on the chessboard of international actors.
