Is this the Matrix?

There are days when I swell with rage when I follow the news on social media. There are days when I laugh out loud because of anger. There are days when I surrender and accept the new type of agenda-setting, and find myself in a depression. Do you wonder who controls the mainstream of social media? When social media began to expand, people thought that spreading the news would no longer be in hands of the mainstream media, that they will not control knowledge. They believed that they would have the same access to their audience. Accordingly, we all were going to know the truth, there were going to be no lies. But it didn't happen. Instead, media figures and companies have adapted themselves to the new media. The new media became the "new" old.Today, pop stars and movie stars are still directing the masses. They have a huge number of followers on their social media accounts. What they share is trending. If they are sensitive about an issue, the world cares; if they do not, the world does not. And big news media outlets are still setting the agenda. Those like The New York Times, CNN or Reuters, have the biggest resources to produce ads, to spread their words. When they share a news report, it becomes top news in minutes. You find yourself trapped in an agenda set by them and everyone, the professors, think-tank directors, even those working in the wider media, follow the bread crumbs asking no questions. There is nothing left but to follow what the "experts" or the "authorities" announce. That is why, when they want you to talk about the gruesome acts of ISIS, you do; when they want you not to see the barrel bombs of the Assad regime, you do not. If they want you to think that Turkey is becoming an authoritarian regime and Iran is becoming a democracy, you will. Moreover, you will spread these ideas and contribute to making a lie a fact. If you want to resist and try to tell the truth they want to hide, you will just be in a position of defense, trapped once more in an agenda set by them. You will never be able to find yourself trying to talk about the forgotten people in Rohingya, the world's most persecuted people. You haven't heard of them? The Rohingya have been oppressed by "peaceful" Buddhists for decades, living in one of the poorest regions of Myanmar. They are not even granted basic citizenship despite the fact that they have been living there for centuries, unless they change their religion and convert from Islam to Buddhism. They are cut, beheaded, raped, tortured, forced into labor, but you'll never hear about it, as mainstream media will not let you spread the news until they want you to. But it is nearly impossible, as they have no interest in this topic. The major, profitable, huge news corporations, mostly owned by or linked to much bigger corporations dominating the energy, finance or telecommunication sector will not let you see, and share, and spread the news of crimes against humanity or anything else other than what they want you to see, and share, and spread. In a world of cellphones, huge bandwidths, wifi's and 3G/4Gs, we are connected to the mainstream media more than ever. People watch at least 100 hours of television a month, but spend countless hours on the Internet. Think about that, controlling the agenda on the Internet as well as on the televisions and in the papers makes a person or a group more powerful than anything or anyone else. It is literally controlling what people think, but people think that they are free-thinkers. What an illusion! The big media conglomerates that control the majority of mass media are now expanding how they control our minds. Maybe, we are now getting connected to the "Matrix."
