The untold stories of the shedding blue crab

The main stream media of the old-Turkey still stands as the strongest fortress against the Turkey that is shedding like a blue crab

From 1923 to the beginning of 2002, Turkey was ruled by an alliance between civil and military bureaucrats that disregarded an elected parliament. The Kemalist regime first freely elected disfunctional parties through antidemocratic intermediaries. They reduced freely elected governments into "contractors" whose only concern was to produce construction politics, and any policy developments ensuring structural transformation for the sake of democracy was perceived as a 'threat'. The parliament had its hands tied by judicial inspections and was closed down by the military in 1960, 1971 and 1980. On February 28th, 1997, the government was overturned by a memorandum. Ideological apparatus' such as the main stream media, assisted the status quo in the creation of "the great captivity". With their broadcasts, they unesteemed the parliament prior to the coups, and tried to create the impression of a military coup as a necessity. They criminalized the broad masses' requests for democratic rights. Students trying to attend school were accused of "attempting Sharia", and native language education for Kurds was launched as "separatism". Main stream media, which had gained immense strength by being excluded of all sorts of inspections, shaped its recruitment policies in line of this alliance. Even today, they still do not employ religious people, Kurds and democrats. However, Turkey went into a period of transformation after AK Party's victory at the 2002 elections. Although originally founded by conservatives, AK Party has succeeded in developing politics for the segments that had previously been ignored by the status quo, which is the reason why they for the last 12 years have gained support from not only conservatives, but also Turks from all sorts of backgrounds. Subjects previously regarded as taboo are now on the table. Native language education and clothing bans have been lifted. Democratization packages are on their way. Military guardianship has been pushed back. The "mediation process" has ensured that not a single bullet has been fired after a period of 30 years of clashes. Social and economic policies are shaped to include everyone. This entity, which has monopolized the media with its capital, aims at turning around the dynamics by publishing publicoriented manipulative news. However, an alternative media which is showing its support for the change of Turkey has now begun to have an operating effect. Unlike the main stream media, this media is not only meant for distinguished "White Turks", but for people from all kinds of ethnic, religious, economic and political backgrounds. Those previously considered a minority, are now being seen in new-Turkey.Daily Sabah, with its intellectual, unprejudiced, younger crew, is a suitable candidate for representing this new era. I look forward to meeting you at this column every week to tell you the untold stories of the shedding blue crab.
