The first round of the coalition talks is over and it is now very clear that either Turkey will have a coalition government formed between the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the Republican People's Party (CHP) or the nation will go to new elections in late November to elect a new Parliament. The ultraconservative Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has said it will not participate in a coalition and may contribute to the democratic process if a coalition between the AK Party and the CHP cannot be formed. The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), which hosted the AK Party chairman and his team for the first round of talks on the coalition on Wednesday, said it will not take part in any coalition but is prepared to back an AK Party-CHP coalition. The "coalition talks" between the AK Party and the HDP were in fact a discussion on the future of the peace and reconciliation process between the government and the militant Kurds of Turkey.It is clear that the two sides have had some "frank" discussions on the issue and that Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has pointed out that the millions of voters who opted for the HDP in the polls (13 percent) did not vote because they approved of the PKK's terrorist actions but because they wanted the Kurds to take their place in Parliament in earnest, be a part of the political and democratic process and contribute to the future of Turkey. We and the HDP executives also have to remember that not all of those 13 percent who voted for the HDP were Kurds. There were quite a few people from western Turkey who are Turkish who voted for the HDP for the sake of pushing the party above the 10 percent threshold.So the HDP should now make a stand and say the days of armed violence is over and that the Kurdish political movement has become a legitimate entity after the June 7 elections. The HDP should not be left in the shadow of PKK militants who still want violence and conflict. The PKK has declared it is ending the cease-fire. This should not be tolerated by the Kurds of Turkey who have seen the merits and dividends of the peace and reconciliation process.However, HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş said if it were up to the HDP they would make continuous calls for the PKK to lay down their arms and added "here I am making a call for the PKK to lay down arms. This is not something that can be done by appeals." Then Demirtaş is admitting that the HDP is simply dominated by the PKK and that arms and violence are superior to democracy, politics and peace for the Kurds of Turkey. This should not be the case. We should not allow this to be the case. The Kurds of Turkey should not allow this to be the case.Those who voted for the HDP did not vote for the continuation of the conflict in Turkey but they voted for the sake and safety of the peace process. PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan should see this in his island prison quarters in İmralı and the PKK leaders who are holed up in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq.You can no longer just declare the peace process null and void and carry on with terrorism and violence. Those who make such a mistake will pay a very high price.
