After all the speculation, political intrigue and reprimands, Hakan Fidan is back to square one following an extremely short "political career."All he has done is create needless speculation that has tarnished his image, and yet he is still the chief bureaucrat fully able to take care of Turkey's intelligence apparatus, while the country and the region go through critical times.When Hakan Fidan resigned as the undersecretary of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) on Feb. 7 to become a candidate hopeful for a ticket from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the June parliamentary elections, at first people thought he had the blessing of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu. Yet it soon became apparent that the unimaginable had happened and that Fidan had quit despite the strong objections of President Erdoğan.Erdoğan publicly declared that he was extremely unhappy about what Fidan did, while stressing that Fidan is the man who has all the intimate knowledge and secrets of the state and the president, and thus he should have stayed on in his post at this critical point in history. Fidan met Erdoğan during this period and the president apparently put the harsh reality to him in a very clear manner.Davutoğlu seemed to support Fidan's career decision but he remained silent as Erdoğan declared his strong objections over and over again.In the end, Fidan realized that he would not get far in his political career and that he will never be able to overcome the anger and the disappointment of Erdoğan, and thus threw in the towel.At the end of the day, Erdoğan got what he wanted and also proved who really has the final say in Turkey. Despite everything, Erdoğan was fully justified in his anger and frustration. Turkey and the world, with special emphasis to our region, are in critical times with the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham problem looming over the Middle East, Iran expanding its sphere of influence in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and probably in the Arab Gulf, Israel continuing its arrogance and challenging Turkey. At the same time, the enemies of Turkey are ganging up to halt it from becoming a major power, there is the critical situation in Ukraine and claims of new Russian expansionist policies, problems with Greece and the mess in Cyprus, the Armenian claims and their all-out effort to declare the events of 1915 as an act of genocide. Lest we forget, of course, the government's fight against the Gülen Movement at home and abroad as Gülenists try to undermine and undermine the Erdoğan administration. All of these need the attention of an experienced intelligence chief. Added to all this is the fact that Fidan is one of the architects of the peace and reconciliation process with the Kurds and his role remains vital as this issue has also reached a critical stage.So common sense prevailed, Fidan took a step back and he was reinstated as the MİT boss. All that has happened is a needless waste of time and energy and a tarnished image. Was it worth all this?The opposition is up in arms saying the fact that Fidan made public his political preferences by opting to become an active politician in the AK Party ranks disqualifies him from being reinstated.Yet they seem to forget that many bureaucrats have resigned in vital places and have returned back to their state offices when they failed to be elected in the past. This also covers many opposition candidates.Besides this, it is an open fact that Fidan has been strongly affiliated to Erdoğan and Davutoğlu and has been like a shadow minister for ages. Thus his AK Party affiliations are nothing new.Besides in his resignation letter on Feb. 7, Fidan said he was "tired." The opposition and many others will of course question him about this statement and say "if you are so tired why are you back in the MİT office?"Fidan is a top class bureaucrat who does his job to perfection. Yet, his political sixth sense is not really up to par.
