The government of Ahmet Davutoğlu is under fire for allowing the peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of Iraq to cross through Turkish territory and move to the Syrian border city of Kobani to help rescue the city from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham's (ISIS) bloody siege.The opposition has urged the Turkish government not to allow northern Iraqi Peshmerga forces through Turkey and have accused the government of contradicting itself on the policy of not allowing any assistance to the Kurdish militias in Kobani, who are directly linked to Turkey's PKK terrorist organization.President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Unity Party (PYD) a terrorist entity linked to Turkey's PKK and that some of the forces defending the city of Kobani include PKK militants. It is no secret that the PKK forces holed up in the Qandil Mountains of northern Iraq had Syrian citizens among them and that some of them rushed to Kobani to help out in defense of the city. It was also clear that these PKK people were useless in the fight against ISIS fighters and thus showed that the PKK is a paper tiger that cannot face a real battle and is only capable of harming Turkish soldiers by exploding remote-controlled bombs under Turkish convoys.So Kobani was about to fall to the ISIS forces. It took days of repeated heavy bombing by coalition fighters, led by the Americans, to halt the ISIS advances.But, as Erdoğan put it, you need ground forces to deal with the ISIS fighters and it is clear that neither the PKK nor the PYD are really up to the task.So it needed an outside force to do the trick. Turkey would not and should not send its forces to defend Kobani and then clean up the ISIS elements in the area. The peshmerga was the best choice. Erdoğan offered this to the Americans during his phone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama. The KRG parliament approved the motion to send the peshmerga forces to help Kobani and the scene was set for the Iraqi Kurds to help out their brothers and sisters in Kobani.The PYD of Syria will not welcome the peshmerga forces with open arms. The PYD wants to create its own enclave in northern Syria at the Turkish border and thus open up a new potential PKK front against Turkey. KRG President Massoud Barzani has never looked upon the PKK or the PYD with sympathy. The PKK and Turkey fought against the PKK in northern Iraq in the 1990s. So Barzani's peshmerga presence in Kobani will only spoil PYD plans for dominance in the region.The peshmerga forces are friendly forces to the Turkish Armed Forces. Thus their presence in Kobani is a welcome development rather than a threat to Turkey.Besides all this, the Free Syrian Army has also offered to send its forces to help out in Kobani within 36 hours, which is a welcome development. That would be even better than the peshmerga intervention. What would the militant Kurds of Turkey, who drove people into the violent streets to protest Turkey's alleged inactivity in Iraq, say now that the Free Syrian Army wants to help out in Kobani? This is the real sincerity test.
