The only alternative to Russia's expansion

We have witnessed a "coup attempt" directed at the Turkish government in recent days. On Dec. 17, 2013, while prosecutors loyal to cleric Fethullah Gülen were carrying out the necessary preparations for the operation against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his circle, the project partners of the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP), the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) from Baku-Azerbaijan, Georgia and into Italy made a final investment decision.Strangely enough, this coincidence gives an account of the recent issues witnessed in Turkey. This is because TANAP and TAP are important historic steps, opening a pathway to deal with the dilemma observed in Crimea. These projects will finalize the infrastructure project, called the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), which will lead to the integration of Eurasia. Furthermore, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and Italy will undergo an integration process in the energy sector with the implementation of the second phase of the operation of the Shah Deniz gas-condensate bed. At the very time when the agreement was signed, Erdoğan was talking about visa exemptions with the EU and said, "I continuously follow the progress of the accession process, and Turkey is determined." However, the preparations for an attempted coup had already commenced in those days. The European countries, the U.S. and the U.K. did not realize the real meaning of Turkey's aim to connect the energy resources from the Caspian region, Iraq, south Mediterranean (Israel) and Iran to Europe via the SGC until Crimea opted to join Russia following a fake referendum. Alternatively, they have carried out an incorrect analysis and did not give credit to Russia as a part of this project. The Crimean crisis, however, explains Turkey's new foreign policy based on the Kurdish peace talks and regional integration. It is important to disclose that Turkey's new foreign policy is the only alternative against Russia's own policies, imposing its own hegemony toward the region. Therefore, the SCG and the New Silk Road should not only be considered as financial investments, but also peace and political integration projects. With the significant contributions of Azerbaijan and Turkey, the SCG bears much more historic, financial and political significance than the current figures shows. This project is one of the most important and historic steps for peace, welfare and real integration. Besides, the energy agreements between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan - and more importantly, Israel and Iran's unavoidable participation in the SCG in the following period - should be taken into consideration. All of these will bring a new Turkey, a new Middle East and even a new world. There is no doubt that, with this new world, we will go beyond the limits of the 21st century without wars focused on protection factors. In this respect, energy networks, trade corridors, railways and the integration of countries and continents are the distinctive features explaining the separation of the upcoming new period. The author of "Azerbaijan," Taleh Ziyadov, points out that the railway network to be completed between Kars-Tbilisi-Baku and the Marmaray project are two important steps for non-stop railway transportation between Europe and China. Ziyadov says Baku will be connected to Europe via Istanbul with the implementation of the Marmaray Project. A non-stop railway network will be expected between Europe and China. The other project is another railway network from Azerbaijan and Iran to India. Indeed, Ziyadov has described the Modern Silk Road. However, this project is based on two important factors:First, the rise of a new economy based on exportable goods that revives the trade routes of the related countries along with the development of technology-based sectors. Second, maintaining peace and political sustainability of the countries within the transit corridor. These are the only ways to sustain peace and safe transition in those regions. The integration of the middle and south transit corridors, starting from China through the New Silk Road, is necessary for Europe to overcome the financial crisis. In this respect, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey will be the key countries. A new financial cycle will come in which energy transfer is integrated into transit routes. At first, disputed regions may be disabled and a financial integration process between the related countries will commence. It is also important to consider the New Silk Road with the Southern Gas Corridor, transferring the Khazar's energy resources to Europe. Therefore, the Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway and the Marmaray projects are an important beginning. These projects will be first integration of energy transitions in the south. Apart from integrating the economies of China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, it will create a new trade network connecting these countries to Europe. These projects will also contribute to political sustainability in the disputed regions. Consequently, Turkey's current foreign policy and the SCG and the New Silk Road projects against the Crimean crisis and the emergence of Russia's expansionist policies are the only exit points in the middle and long-term.
