Six films debut in Turkish theaters this week
Julieta (2016)

60-year-old Julieta is about to leave Spain when she finds out that her daughter, Anita, whom she hasn't seen for a long time, is still alive and has three children. She had planned to start a new life in Portugal, but that changes after her discovery causing her to stay in Madrid. She writes a letter to her daughter. When Julieta writes the letter, the audience watches her life through flashbacks, including her life with daughter's father and the tense relations with her servant. Which of these events caused Julieta to leave Antia? Adapted from three short stories by Alice Munro, the movie is the elaborate work of Pedro Almodovar, a cult director from Spanish cinema. Even though "Julieta" is less complex when compared to his other movies, every scene displays Almodovar's dexterity.

Toni Erdmann (2016)
Director: Maren Ade
This entertaining German movie, which has made an overwhelming impression in the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of a tough woman called Ines who put everything, including her old father Winfried, on the back burner for the sake of her career. When Winfried loses his beloved dog, he decides to visit his daughter who lives in Sofia; however, when he finds out that their meeting doesn't go as well as he expected, he take a different approach by creating a new identity, "Toni Erdmann." His new identity encourages him to embrace the absurdities in his daughter's life rather than resisting them. Even though the movie, which is a shame comedy, resembles the classics of British television, such as The Office, director Maren Ade's aesthetic style is completely idiosyncratic.

While middle school teacher Emad and his wife Rana are asleep in their home in Tehran, the building they live in suddenly collapses leading them to move to another apartment. However, there are some traces from the previous inhabitant in one of the rooms of this new flat. Even though the former female tenant is no longer there, she drastically affects the couple's lives. After the French drama film The Past, Farhadi goes back to his country. "The Salesman," with its strong characters, well-written dialogues and its ability to reveal cracked and ignored relationship faults through a single development, demonstrates the talent of its director Farhadi who has the skill to look at interpersonal communication difficulties from a subtle-sensitive perspective.
