The Last Family (2016)Although Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński, who lived in the late 20th century, is famous in his homeland, many people outside Poland have never heard of him. Director Matuszynski seeks to rectify this in his ambitious new film, in which he recreates some of the material of Beksiński, who obsessively recorded video and tapes of himself and his family. While dark and violent paintings on the walls hint at a complicated and troubled life, the artist is not shown on the job, but with his family — the loyal and tenacious wife Zofia, his mother and mother-in-law, who both live with them and their neurotic and problematic son. Matuszynski remains loyal to Beksiński's original material in his elaboration, rich with detail and set against the changing decor and fashions in Poland between 1975 and 2005.
