Youth called to film the Battle of Gallipoli

On the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli, the Zeytinburnu Municipality of Istanbul is organizing a short film competition focusing on the war. Both professionals and amateurs can join the competition until Feb. 1



The Zeytinburnu Municipality is looking for directors who can tell stories of the Battle of Gallipoli and Gallipoli heroes on the silver screen. The short film competition's motto is "They wrote the epic, you direct the film," and the competition is open to all amateur and professional directors. The deadline to register for the competition - which offers TL 15,000 ($5,156) in prize money to the winner - is Feb. 1, 2016. The short film competition is being organized to celebrate the centenary of the Battle of Gallipoli. The directors are expected to convey the spirit of the battle through the camera lens and to the audience. The aim of the competition, organized by the Zeytinburnu Municipality Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs, is to foster greater appreciation for the nation's history, showcase the talent of young people who can reanimate the spirit of the Battle of Gallipoli and bring this epic event to the stage by encouraging young people in cinema.Speaking about the short film competition, Zeytinburnu Municipality Mayor Murat Aydın said, "We are trying to discover talented people via this Gallipoli-themed short film competition. Our ancestors were once part of an epic battle for the independence of their country. The Gallipoli saga is the perfect proof of brotherhood." The short films accepted for the competition will be judged by the TRT director of Istanbul, assistant professor Abdülhamit Avşar and journalist Coşkun Çokyiğit under the presidency of veteran cinema critic, İhsan Kabil. After the judgings, the winner of the competition will receive TL 15,000, second place will receive TL 10,000 and third place will receive TL 5,000 at the award ceremony that will take place on March 18, 2016. Two other quality films will receive the Zeytinburnu Municipality Special Award and be presented with TL 5,000 and TL 2,000, respectively.
