The Umbrellas of CherbourgMadame Emery and her daughter Genevieve live by selling umbrellas in a small boutique in Cherbourg, Normandia. The movie starts with 17-year-old Genevieve and 20-year-old car mechanic Guy Foucher falling in love with each other in 1957. Guy is summoned and sent to Algeria to fight in the war. While he is away for army service, Genevieve finds out she is pregnant and obliged to accept the wedding proposal of a wealthy jeweler, Roland Cassard. This debut from stage director and writer Eggers focuses on William and Katherine, who lead a Christian life with their five children in the wilderness. When their newborn child disappears and their crops fail, the family faces a terrifying superstition and their own fears as they turn against each other. Yet, there is something beyond their worst fears: Evil lurking in the woods. The film, starring Anya Taylor and Joy Ralph Ineson, is a terrifying masterpiece that should not be missed at this year's Filmekimi.
