Thursday cinema at SALT Beyoğlu

Thursday Cinema at SALT continues with four cult Turkish films from the 1980s. Organized in parallel with the exhibition How did we get here, the September-October program Thursday Cinema will take place in the Walk-in Cinema at SALT Beyoğlu. Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.Aaahh Belinda (1986)Director: Atıf Yılmaz94 minutesTurkish; English subtitlesAmongst director Atıf Yılmaz's films about women, which draw influence from the feminist movement of the 1980s, Aaahh Belinda! holds a special place in Turkish cinema due to its fantastic storyline. In the film, actress Serap (Müjde Ar) unwillingly takes a role in an advert that lands her trapped in the world of the lower-middle class woman she was portraying. With its sharp humor, this film examines gender roles while demonstrating the routines of the middle-class, bohemian lifestyle in Istanbul, giving it the quality of a documentary about the 1980s in Turkey.Anayurt Oteli [Motherland Hotel] (1986)Director: Ömer Kavur89 minutesAdapted from Yusuf Atılgan's novel, Anayurt Oteli [Motherland Hotel] is a benchmark both for director Ömer Kavur's filmography and the Turkish cinema. Responsible for the hotel left behind by his family in an unnamed rural town, the character Zebercet's (Macit Kopen) encounters with depression are reflected in a language that paved a path once uncommon in Turkish cinema.A woman who arrives on a delayed train, to stay a single night at the hotel but promises to return later, drives Zebercet to obsession, apparent in his sickly relations with his environment, which lay the foundation for an atmosphere of suspense. The film contains nudity. Only suitable for people aged 18 or older. Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] (1985)Director: Başar Sabuncu82 minutesThe first film of late director Başar Sabuncu, Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] sets itself apart from films of a similar nature because of its elements that estrange the audience. With the wife of the character played by Şener Şen pregnant with their fifth child, the film depicts the life of a low-income white-collar worker who, unable to cope with his overwhelming distress, throws himself stark naked onto the streets where he soon becomes a media hero. Detailing new journalistic approaches, the boom in advertising, and Prime Minister Turgut Özal's prime-time TV programs titled İcraatin İçinden[Inside the Activity], the film sketches an impressive panorama of Turkey in the 1980s.
