19 films to compete at Berlinale


The films that will compete for the Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards at the 65th International Berlin Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, were announced on Tuesday. According to the official statement released by the festival committee, 19 films will compete for the Berlinale bears at this year's festival, which will run from Feb. 5-15 in Berlin. The festival, which will open with the world premiere of Isabel Coixet's "Nobody Wants the Night," will hand out the awards on Feb. 14. The main "Competition" category of the festival will not include any Turkish films this year. Here is the lineup of competitors:Werner Herzog's Germany and the U.S. co-production film "'Queen of the Desert," Sebastian Schipper's "Victoria" from Germany, former Berlinale bear winner Andreas Dresden's "Als Wir Traeumten" (When We Are Dreaming), Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups" from the U.S., the opening film of the festival "Nobody Wants the Night" by Spanish Isabel Coixet, Peter Greenaway's "Eisenstein in Guanajuato" from the U.K., Andrew Haigh's "45 Years," Cafer Panahi's "Taxi" from Iran, French director Benoit Jocquot's "Journal d'une femme de chamber" (The Diary of a Chambermaid), Jayro Bustamante's "Ixcanul Volcano" from Guatemala, Russian director Aleksei German's "Under Electric Clouds," Malgorzata Szumowska's "Body" from Poland, Di Phan Dang's "Cha va con va" ( Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories) from Vietnam, Wen Jiang's "Yi bu zhi yao" (Gone With The Bullets) from China, Radu Jude's "Aferim!" (Bravo!) from Romania, Patricio Guzman's documentary film "El boton de nacar" (Pearl Buttons) from Chili, Pablo Larrain's "The Club," Sabu's "Chasuk's Journey" from Japan and Laura Bispuri's "Sworn Virgin" from Italy."Cindrella," which is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Cate Blanchett and Lily James, "Mr. Holmes" by Bill Condon, "Elser" by Oliver Hrischbiegel and "Everything will be Fine" by Wim Wenders will not be competing for the Golden Bear at the festival. Renowned actors Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling and Christian Bale are expected to attend this year's International Berlin Film Festival.
