Governors to take responsibility in border trade


The government has announced new trade regulations that will have a direct impact on trade practices in Turkish border towns, delegating key responsibilities to the governors in Turkey's border provinces. to provincial governors along Turkey's borders the responsibility of proper conductThe Turkish Ministry of Economy's Communiqué on the Implementation of Border Trade came into force after the publication of the Official Gazette. According to the communiqu, which stipulates border trade principles and procedures in the framework of provisions that are laid out in the Cabinet-approved Decree on the Regulation of Border Trade, import and export transactions will require a customs declaration to be made within the scope of border trade regulations.Similar to the previous regulation, specific products are barred from entering Turkey under the premise that these goods could create unauthorized competition in the domestic market. In order to protect domestic production and manufacturing companies, imports of hazelnuts, pistaschios, sugar and tea are prohibited -- along with other products which were previously barred from import by the Turkish Food, Livestock and Agriculture Ministry. Stipulations were also imposed on the import of veterinary supplies; namely, veterinary medications, biological products and active substances used in production of these products, all of which will require approval from the Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry prior to being imported.
