Turkey ranks first for number of trademarks in Europe


Kemal Yamankaradeniz, the chairman of one of Turkey's leading intellectual property rights' firms, Destek Patent, said the number of applications for patents and utility models in Turkey increased to 17,541 in 2015 from 15,943 the previous year. Yamankaradeniz said Turkey ranks first in Europe in terms of the number of trademarks and 25th in the world in terms of the number of patents, adding: "We are the country that makes the greatest number of trademark applications in Europe." Speaking at a press conference in Antalya, Yamankaradeniz said the company has opened an office in Antalya. Referring to the fact that there are millions of trademarks in Turkey, Yamankaradeniz said the company is a supporter of the Turkish Patent Institute. Stressing that one needs to first decide to create a trademark, Yamankaradeniz said branding is like constructing a building in the virtual world. He added that one should not expect instant results from investments in branding, saying that innovation and design are the greatest supporters in the branding process. Stressing the significance of supporting businesspeople, Yamankaradeniz said that government incentives help industrialists participatein the global market in a more self-assured manner. He emphasized that branding studies will lead to a product that will enable Turkey to make a breakthrough, adding that this product will play a great part in the country's future and emphasizing the significance of patents for development, inventions and new software in the defense industry as well. According to Yamankaradeniz, the number of applications for patents and utility models in Turkey increased to 17,541 in 2015 from 15,943 the previous year. The number of applications for trademarks soared from 110,544 in 2014 to 110,679 in 2015. Despite a fall in trademark registration applications, Turkey made progress in trademark and patent applications compared to previous years. He added that "We are the country that makes the greatest number of trademark applications in Europe," pointing to the machinery, chemical and home electric sectors as ranking highest in terms of the number of patents they obtain. Yamankaradeniz said Antalya submitted 67 patent applications in 2015, becoming the city with the 11th highest number of applications in Turkey. Antalya submitted 3,071 trademark applications and ranked fifth among other cities in the same year.
