Support pledged for a chemistry institute headed by Aziz Sancar

The success of Turkey's first Nobel Prize in chemistry laureate, Aziz Sancar, has led to big players in the chemistry sector announcing that they are willing to provide "full support" Sancar. The president of Istanbul Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters' Association (İKMİB), Murat Akyüz, said they are ready to provide full support to Sancar, who has said he may establish a team in Turkey.Along with Akyüz, other players also said they will provide "full financial support" if Sancar eventually wants to establish an institute in chemistry in Turkey led by him. "If our government assigns our association to be in charge of the foundation of an institute in this respect, we will be more than willing to accept this honor and do our best. Furthermore, this would mean we will have the adequate resources to succeed with the support of the government," Akyüz said. He also stressed that since most chemical products are produced in countries with advanced technologies, there is prejudice against Turkey. Moreover, Turkey is deemed as a country to fail in the chemistry sector. "However, Sancar winning the Nobel Prize is eradicating these prejudices, and has created a great advantage for the Turkish chemistry sector," Akyüz added.Akyüz said they are willing to visit Sancar on their first official U.S. tour. "Turkish scientists do not have to reside in Turkey. For our scientists to be working in the centers of chemistry wherever they are in the world means a transfer of serious know-how to our country," Akyüz added.
