Unemployment stands below eurozone average, slightly increases in June
Turkey's unemployment rate rose to 9.6 percent in June, increasing 0.3 percent from 9.3 percent in May, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data released on Tuesday.
This figure was equal to the average rate of 28 EU member states. Moreover, it was lower than the 11.1 unemployment rate of the eurozone in June 2015, including 12.5 percent in Italy and 10.3 percent in France.
The number of unemployed people over the age of 15 increased from 2.789 million to 2.880 million in the same period and increased by 226,000 compared to the same month of the previous year. In the 12-month period, the unemployment rate increased 0.5 percent.
Non-agricultural unemployment was announced as 11.7 percent with a 0.6 percent increase compared to June 2014. Youth unemployment, which includes individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, increased 1 percent to reach 17.7 percent.
The number of employed people over the age of 15 increased by 675,000 in the 12-month period to reach 27.261 million, while the employment rate increased 0.4 percent to reach 47.1 percent. Non-agricultural employment drove this increase by creating 613,000 new jobs with 51 percent being employed in the services sector, followed by 22 percent in the agriculture sector, 19.7 percent in the industrial sector and 7.3 percent in the construction sector.
The labor force participation rate (LFPR) increased 0.8 percent to reach 52.1 percent. Turkey's labor force was announced as 30,141,000 with an increase of 901,000 compared to June 2014. The LFPR was announced as 72.4 percent for the male labor force and 32.3 percent for the female labor force, with an increase of 1.4 percent for the latter compared to the same month of the previous year.
The ratio of unregistered workers was announced as 34.6 percent, marking a 1.8 percent decrease. Seasonally adjusted employment increased by 19,000 people to reach 26,621,000, indicating a 46 percent employment rate. Seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 83,000, indicating an unemployment rate of 10.4 percent. Seasonally adjusted LFPR was announced as 51.4 percent.
