Turkish Cyprus water pipeline project to be completed on Friday


The 66.5 kilometer-long water pipeline, which is part of the Northern Cyprus Water Project developed to transport water from Alaköprü Dam in Turkey's Mersin to alleviate water scarcity in Turkish Cyprus, will be completed on Aug. 7 when the last part is installed. An opening ceremony will be held in Northern Cyprus on Aug. 7 with the attendance of Forestry and Water Affairs Minister Veysel Eroğlu. Various structures and pipelines were constructed as part of the project, including the Alaköprü Dam in Mersin, the Northern Cyprus Geçitköy Dam in Kyrenia, a 24-kilometer-long water pipeline on the Turkish side, a 3.7-kilometer-long water pipeline on the Northern Cyprus side and a 67-kilometer-long water pipeline between the Geçitköy Facility, Treatment Facility and Nicosia.A water treatment facility in Northern Cyprus and water pipelines for Kyrenia, Famagusta and Rizokarpaso are still being constructed. When the project is complete, 75 million cubic meters of water will be transported from the Alaköprü Dam to the Geçitköy Dam via a 106-kilometer-long water pipeline (23 kilometers on the Turkish side, 80 kilometers below sea level and three kilometers on the Northern Cyprus side). It is planned that 38 million cubic meters of water will be used for drinking and 37 million cubic meters will be used for irrigation. It is expected that the project will meet the water requirements of Northern Cyprus for the next 50 years and irrigation water will increase the agricultural income of the country.Officials from the Forest and Water Affairs Ministry shared the technical details of the project. They said a special technique was used in the project since the pressure level at the bottom of sea made it impossible to transport water via pipelines. Officials noted that the water will be transported by 80 kilometers of pipelines with suspenders installed 250 meters below the sea's surface, not at the bottom of the sea. Emphasizing that 80,655-meter-long pipes and 132 water gages were produced for the project, officials noted that the diameter of each polyethylene pipeline is 1.6 meter and monolithic length is 500 meters, while its weight is between 148 tons and 183 tons depending on the pressure class. They also underlined that possible damages can be detected beforehand and responded to in time thanks to the transmitters and censors, which will be installed on the pipelines.
