In pursuit of Turkish exporter's aim to reach $500 billion in total volume by 2023, one of the biggest challenges for them are European roads. More than 35 percent of all imports are made via land transportation, and European highways cost Turkish importers about 60 million euros per year. On a per-kilometer basis, Turkey provides the cheapest highways for importers, while Swiss highways are the most expensive. By comparison, German highways charge 85 percent more compared to Turkish highways. In a study by DKV Euro Service on transportation services based on the main European routes, the authors found that Turkey provides the cheapest highways in Europe with a per-kilometer cost of 0.0225 euros. According to 2014 numbers, the highway service price per kilometer is 0.14 euros in Slovakia, 0.1519 euros in Germany, 0.18 euros in Italy, 0.19 euros in Spain, 0.2063 euros in the Czech Republic, 0.25 euros in France, 0.357 euros in Austria and 1.96 euros in Switzerland. The U.K. charges 830 pounds ($1,299) for yearly highway services, while Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Romania charge 1,250 euros.
