Products supposedly of EU origin turn out to be Chinese

The Economy Ministry sent a written order to the Customs Ministry to revise all ATR-free circulation certificates after textile products allegedly of EU origin and sold in Turkey turned out to be Chinese-made. Authorities from the Economy Ministry said a similar incident was seen in some products that were imported from Bulgaria three months ago, emphasizing that ATR certifications, which facilitate the sale of European-origin products in Turkey, are being abused.

Following the "poisonous shoes" that were imported from China, products such as pants, jackets and suits that come to Turkey from Europe without examination have rocked the agenda. Examinations conducted by customs inspectors revealed that a large portion of garments worth $900 million that were imported from Europe were Chinese-made. It was found that those who wanted to escape additional tax and anti-dumping duties presented products as if they were made in Europe. Products that are allowed to enter Turkey by European authorities will be supervised by the relevant chambers of commerce and industry and will be returned if they turn out to have been made outside of Europe. The Economy Ministry also said if the Far East cannot sell Chinese-made products in Turkey, they import the products via a European country because it is easier for them to sell products with ATR certification in Turkey.
