Tourism income in 2014 increased by 6.2 percent compared to the previous year, reaching $34.3 billion, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on Friday. While 81.5 percent of this income was gained through foreign tourists, 18.5 percent was gained through Turkish nationals living abroad. While average expenditure per capita was $828, the average expenditure of foreigners was $775 per capita, and the average expenditure of Turkish nationals living abroad was $1,130 per capita in 2014. Individual expenditures constituted $26.2 billion of total tourism income, whereas $8.3 billion of tourism income was obtained from package tour expenditures. Turkey's popularity as a tourism center also increased. The number of people visiting Turkey has pushed Turkey near Italy on the world's most visited destinations chart, as tourists reached an all-time high of 37 million in 2014, according to an announcement by Culture and Tourism Minister Ömer Çelik. Turkey succeeded in attracting 5.5 percent more tourists in 2014 compared to the previous year. According to a 2014 World Tourism Organization report, Turkey ranks as the sixth most popular destination after Italy, which ranks fifth with over 47 million visitors.
In 2014, the number of Turkish citizens who traveled abroad increased by 6.1 percent compared to the previous year, reaching almost 8 million, and the average expenditure was $685 per capita.
