Virtual shopping gets a boost in cold weather

With a cold snap rocking the country, virtual shopping has seen a sharp boom since consumers are experiencing difficulty traveling to supermarkets and shopping malls. As a result, the upsurge in virtual shopping has increased the turnovers of supermarkets by 50 percent. Over the past two days in particular, consumers have ordered a wide range of products on the Internet, including fresh fruits and vegetables, ready-to-serve food, meat and dry foodstuffs. E-Commerce Group Manager Mehmet Tözge said that they had reinforced their capacity with more staff and vehicles in order to catch up with online orders, which increased with the rainy and snowy weather. According to Tözge, there has been more than a 50 percent increase in the sales of such products as fresh fruits and vegetables, baby diapers and detergents. Online shopping is not only limited to food products in showy weather, Tözge emphasized, adding, "Consumers are also buying electronic products online, such as TV sets, cellphones, tablet PCs and computers." Sabahattin Gündoğdu, CEO of tummarketler.com, an online shopping platform that incorporates 16 local supermarket chains, said fruits and vegetables are ordered online. Online shopping orders placed via the Migros Virtual Market have also increased 1.5-fold within a week.
