A good draw for Turkey's national basketball teams

The draw for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments went the way Turkey wanted it to in both the men's and women's tournaments. The 12 Giant Men will compete against Senegal and Canada. The women's national team will face Cameroon and Argentina



Turkey's senior men's and women's national teams have learned their paths to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments draw. "The draw went the way we wanted it to in both the men's and women's tournaments," TBF President Harun Erdenay said. "To make it to the Olympics we're going to have to battle to the very end with all our strength. Right now our goal is for both our men's and women's national teams to compete at the Rio Olympic Games."The 12 Giant Men, who qualified in accordance with the final standings of EuroBasket 2015 and the FIBA World Ranking, will travel to Manila, Philippines for their 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament from July 4-10. They will compete in Group A against Senegal and Canada. The host Philippines will face France and New Zealand in Group B. The top two teams from each group will match-up in the semi-finals with the last team standing advancing to the Olympics in Rio."I can say that this time luck was on our side," senior men's national team head coach Ergin Ataman said. "Of course only the team that wins this tournament will head to the Olympics. We're going to give everything we have to be the team that goes to Rio. In Manila the team that will be toughest for us is undoubtedly France. "Turkey's senior women's national team will compete at the 12-team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women in Nantes, France from June 13-19. They will start the tournament in Group B against Cameroon and Argentina. Five teams from the 12-team field will advance to the Olympics in Rio."Our goal is to finish first in our group," senior women's national team head coach Aziz Akkaya said. "We have to win a total of three games to advance to the Olympic Games. These are games that we absolutely must win."Turkey qualified for the tournament by finishing in fifth place at EuroBasket Women 2015. The team finished the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women in Ankara undefeated and advanced to its first ever Olympic Games in London, where the squad finished in fifth place."When we return from the draw, we're going to meet with the staffs of our Senior Men's and Women's Teams immediately to start our preparations ," TBF Director of Sport Barbaros Akkaş said. The winners of each of the three tournaments will all take the highly coveted last remaining tickets for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
