17 ISIS suspects arrested by Malaysian police

Malaysian police have arrested 17 militants on suspicion of planning acts of terror in the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur.Police Inspector-General Khalid Abu Bakar said in an early morning tweet on Monday that two of the 17 suspects had just returned from Syria."Congratulations to the police's Counter Terrorism division yesterday [Sunday] for arresting 17 people planning to commit acts of terror in Kuala Lumpur. Two of them had just got back from Syria," he wrote. There was no further explanation as to exactly what acts of terror the men were planning, or what they were doing in Syria.Rebel groups are currently battling the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in Syria - a country that remains wracked by civil war.The latest detentions brought the number of people arrested in Malaysia - believed to be supporters of ISIS - to 92, since last year.Last week, Malaysia's home ministry proposed two new anti-terror laws in a bid to curb suspected militant activities in the country. The legislation reintroduces indefinite detention without trial, and allows the seizure of passports of anyone suspected of supporting terror acts.Politicians from all sides have criticized the laws as a revival of the controversial Internal Security Act (ISA), which was repealed in 2012 following a public outburst.
