Italian jazz rhythms hit the shores of Istanbul
The Akbank Jazz Festival continues to bring jazz rhythms to the city with a live performance from Stefano Battaglia on Oct. 14. The Milan-born musician, who has established a reputation among classical music circles with his rich baroque and modern music repertoire, began performing live at European classical music festivals as a solo pianist. Toward the end of the 1980s, Battaglia took over the jazz scene, and his talent was soon recognized by jazz lovers. His success was also crowned with "Best New Jazz Artist Award" by Musica Jazz magazine. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with well-known jazz artists such as Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Dewey Redman, Tony Oxley, Barre Phillips, Steve Swallow and Enrico Rava apart from Italian jazz musicians. Known as a productive musician, Battaglia won numerous awards as a solo artist as well as a bandleader, and released more than 100 albums. His two-CD album "RE: Pasolini," which he dedicated to Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini, was applauded in jazz circles. He shares his experiences on improvisation, composing and creativity with young musicians at Siena Jazz Workshops. When: Oct. 14Where: Akbank Sanat, Istanbul
