International symposium brings ceramic artists to Eskişehir

Running until Sept. 20, the ninth edition of the International Eskişehir Terra Cotta Symposium hosts 60 students under the guidance of five foreign ceramic artists, helping them to improve their artistic and personal development. Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), symposium head Professor Bilgehan Uzuner of the Anadolu University Faculty of Fine Arts, said the symposium hosted ceramic artists from Germany, Argentina, Japan and the U.S. Pointing to their unique art works, Uzuner said artist Tuk Sumari will make a giant replica of an orchid grown in Thailand and leave it in Turkey. Additionally, almost 60 students will attend the symposium from different universities. "They work based on a master-apprentice relationship and assist foreign ceramic artists. The students benefit from the knowledge of foreign artists," he said. Each artist has special skills, knowledge, techniques and philosophies. "Students learn many things here. Almost 500 students have attended the symposium's previous editions so far. Students have good relations with the artists, who then help the most talented ones find a job," she added. Argentinean participant Vila Villaverde said the symposium is very useful for students, adding that she has attended many symposiums so far but none have been as useful as this one. "Here, students help me a lot. If they want to come to Argentina, I will help them find a job," she said.Sena Okumuş, a third year student at Anadolu University's Department of Ceramics, said students benefit from the experiences of foreign artists. Another student, Burcu Gürcü of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, said she greatly enjoys the symposium. "It is the first time I have attended such an event. I enjoy watching the artists; I want to work abroad when my master's degree is finished. I hope the network I created here will help me to realize my dream," she said. Organized by the Tepebaşı Municipality, the symposium began on Sept. 5, and also hosts Heike Hamann from Germany, Mitsuo Shoji from Australia and Satoru Hoshino from Japan.
